Chairman:   Don Scott - Kraton

Mission statement

To maintain and upgrade the existing industry standard test methods of the pine chemical industry and develop new and improved methods as needed. Whenever practical, work towards harmonized global standard test methods.

Organization

The Testing Committee is made up of three subgroups:

  • ASTM D01.34 Subcommittee (Pine Chemicals and Hydrocarbon Resins)
  • ISO TC35/SC10/WG5 Working Group (Naval Stores)
  • PCA Standard Test Methods

Goals

  • Maintain ASTM, ISO and PCA Standard Test Methods.
  • Publish results or round robin to establish the relationship between softening points by the Mettler Method with and without the ball.

PCA Test Methods Foreword

The test methods used by the pine chemicals industry are published primarily by three organizations,   ASTM International,   International Standards Organization  and the Pine Chemicals Association.   ASTM and ISO standard test methods  cover areas of wide industrial interest  including some for the pine chemical industry but do not include  many that are specific to the products and the processes of the  pine chemicals industry.

Some years ago the Pine Chemicals Association  remedied this by collecting and publishing Standard Test Methods for  Tall Oil Products.   The original publication has been updated once and now is is being updated again.

The major reason for this latest updating is the continuing changes in the regulations governing solvent use and the increased emphasis on laboratory safety.

The original publication was limited to tall oil products and this latest update primarily pertains to tall oil but it does include a limited number of test methods related to turpentine.  In addition a Guide to Turpentine Test Methods is included as an appendix. To reflect this change the title has been changed from Standard Test Methods for Tall Oil Products to Standard Test Methods of the Pine Chemical Association.

This updating was made and approved by members of the PCA Testing Committee under the chairmanship of Donald Scott and Phil Hurd and with the support of James Russell.
