“Plasmine Technology receives Facility Excellence Award”

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.  Plasmine Technology-Bay Minette, Alabama Plant, was awarded the Safety and Health Facility Excellence Award on May 1, 2014 by the Pine Chemicals Association.  The award was presented to Steve Violette, President of Plasmine Technology, during the Pine Chemicals Association Spring Meeting that was held at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl.

The Safety and Health Facility Excellence award is given to recognize and honor a member company facility that has identified and evaluated safety and health hazards in the workplace and demonstrated excellence through the implementation of hazard controls that significantly reduced risk, ensuring that employee safety and health is a core value of the organization.

Plasmine’s selection was based on a number of factors, including the implementation of their PICS program (Plasmine’s Improvements of Conditions and Safety) in 2011. This innovative program catapulted their prior 5S Safety program, which focused on “a place for everything and everything in its place,” to the next level in efforts of continuous improvement upon the safety and visual appearance of the facility.

As part of the PICS program, a digital camera was purchased for all employees to use to capture photographs of safety items needing improvement at the facility.  Alternatively, employees could use their cell phones to take photographs of items identified.  Computer files were then implemented for each employee to download the photographs and provide a description of the safety items that could be improved.  This information was transferred to a master file used for reporting, assignment of responsibility for completion and progress tracking, including post-completion photographs of the area(s) identified.  “A clean plant is a safe plant,” remarked Hugh Parker, Manager of Quality & Safety at the Bay Minette Plant.

This innovative program led to 100% involvement of employees to achieve a culture of safety within the facility and resulted in extraordinary improvements in the visual appearance and safety of the workplace.  Since 2011, 1,338 pictures have been submitted with an average yearly completion rate of 96% of the areas identified.

The Pine Chemicals Association congratulates Plasmine Technology’s Bay Minette, Alabama Plant for their commitment to safety and health excellence in the workplace and community which they operate.  More information on this and other awards can be found by visiting www.pinechemicals.org.
