“MeadWestvaco Employee receives Leadership Excellence Award”

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.  Mark Childers, Plant Manager of MeadWestvaco Specialty Chemicals- Charleston Plant, was awarded the Safety and Health Leadership Excellence Award on May 1, 2014 by the Pine Chemicals Association.  The award was presented to Childers during the Pine Chemicals Association Spring Meeting that was held at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl.

The Safety and Health Leadership Excellence award is given to recognize and honor an individual in a top leadership position of a member company that has demonstrated excellence in their organizational leadership skills and strong commitment to manage safety and health programs as a core value of the organization.

Childers’ selection was based on a number of factors, including his implementation of the goal to have zero workplace injuries, which drove a culture of change within the organization.    “The absence of injuries does not necessarily indicate the presence of safety,” remarked Childers.

Childers focused on building a positive safety culture to ensure all employees exhibit the presence of safety in all that they do and has one-on-one contact with each employee to ensure that they hear directly from him that MWV will “not put production over safety.”  Feedback is provided to employees weekly on “positive safety contacts” to reinforce positive safety behavior and ensure that all employees understand that safety is the most important safety aspect of their job.

Under Childers’ leadership, the safety performance of the MWV Charleston Plant has improved from a TCIR high of 4.49 in 2010 to 0.85 in 2013, including the achievement of over one year without an OSHA reportable injury in Fall 2013.  Additionally, over the past 3 years the completion of safety action items and safety incident investigations has increased 21%.

The Pine Chemicals Association congratulates Mark Childers and MeadWestvaco for their commitment to safety and health excellence in the workplace and community which they operate.  More information on this and other awards can be found by visiting
