Indian Pine Chemicals Industry

India, with a population of 1.2 Bn people and GDP of $2.7 Tn is ranked 6th in the world. With 0.7 Mn Hectares under Pine Forests, Crude Gum tapping in year 2017 has fallen to just 1/3rd level from year 1975, when India was the No. 3 producer in the world.  Geographically limited tapping area in the Himalayas, in Northern India, insignificant macro economic impact impact, lack of co-ordinated efforts and little support from the local population, the naturally occurring forests have not been nurtured for a sustainable industry.

The industries for application of Gum Rosin and its derivatives are growing at 7-10% annually, driven by the government game changer introduction of GST to transform India into a single market & push to affordable housing for all, explosion of e-commerce, requiring huge amounts of packing material and increased demands for personal and commercial vehicles.  The industries for application of Gum Turpentine Oil and its derivatives are growing at 6 – 12% depending upon the sub-segment India imports majority of its annual Pine Chemicals requirement, Rosin & Gum Turpentine Oil and their derivatives.

NELLA BAERENTS, Kraton

Towards Sustainable and Intelligent Bioeconomy

To create long term value in a resource-constrained world requires operating in a sustainable manner- environmentally, socially, and in governance. This challenge demands industry to look upstream, downstream, and at own operations, and to incorporate the needs of all stakeholders and the environment into the decision-making process and long-term strategy. CTO refining is at the heart of sustainable bioeconomy. It uses renewable resources in a smart and efficient way: maximizing the value of raw materials and minimising waste and emissions whilst creating economic growth and jobs. This presentation gives insight to Kraton’s long-term strategy on sustainability and how CTO refining creates environmental, social and economic value.

CST and CTO: Global Overview and Trends

The Talloil and Crude Sulphate Turpentine industries are more than 100 year old sustainable and non-subsidized industries. Around 2 Million tonnes of Crude Talloil (CTO) and 200 000 T CST are produced annually, from the 44 Million tonnes of Softwood Kraft pulp . Ongoing Investments in pulpmills to follow the increasing demand of packaging materials and tissue/hygiene products will bring additional volume of CTO and CST and participate to the growth of the Pine derived chemicals market. CST production is now exceeding the volume of gum turpentine. Rosin acids and fatty acids are the most valuable constituents of the CTO plus Tall oil pitch, a bio-fuel . 450 000 tonnes of Tall Oil Rosin , 460 000 T of Talloil fatty acids will be produced in 2018. Rosin derivatives are facing fierce competition from hydrocarbon resins which are gaining market shares . The Pine derived chemical market is growing 4 to 5% per year at a higher rate than the average GDP growth. Asia will have the fastest growth and will drive the demand. Growing environmental concerns will favour the demand for Pine chemicals relying on a sustainable value chain.

HUNTER HARRIS, Ingevity   (Presented by Claudio Carrara)

Enterprise Sustainability

Sustainability in its most basic form reflects how we as a society can meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future. This is best demonstrated in the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals: Many of these goals are global in nature and require the engagement of multiple stakeholders - including governments - for success.

Enterprise sustainability narrows this broader focus to what we as operating enterprises can do within our own range of expertise and influence. The broader sustainability community is encouraging change within the enterprise. We will explore the definition of enterprise sustainability, the drivers behind the response, and how Ingevity is responding to these drivers.

RENÉE M. LANI, American Chemistry Council (ACC)

U.S. and RSB Updates

The presentation will provide a brief overview of U.S. activities that the American Chemistry Council (ACC) and its Pine Chemistry Panel have been following, focusing on those which may have a direct impact on the pine chemistry industry. This overview will include both state and federal regulatory and legislative activity, as well as how the current administration’s policies may affect the industry. The presentation will also detail the activities that the Roundtable for Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) has undertaken this year. As a member of RSB’s Technical Working Group on Displacement Effects, ACC’s Pine Chemistry Panel can provide insight into the processes currently underway to supplement and revise certain RSB standards.

The Future for Rosin Esters in Hot Melt Adhesives

This presentation will cover the market trends and technology developments that are impacting the usage of rosin esters in hot melt adhesives. The individual market segments within adhesives will be discussed and data will be presented that estimates the quantity of rosin esters for each segment in the European market, with some extrapolation to the global view. Regional differences will also be highlighted. A forecast will also be given of how rosin ester usage is expected to further change over the next 5-10 years, and why.

Sust-Forest Plus Project

SustForest Plus is an European innovation project, financed by the INTERREG program for SouthWest Europe (https://www.interreg-sudoe.eu/gbr/home), with some of the major players in the value chain of natural resin in the region, to boost and consolidate the economic activity in the sector.

With a total budget of 1,680,000 $, the partners (representatives of forest owners, resin workers, forest regional administrations and research and innovation centers) will work together for 36 months, until 2021, to create an European Resin Network, to define a territorial strategy for natural pine resin production, to share best practices and innovations and to develop the sustainability concept for European natural resin and to place natural resins in European policies.

Portuguese Pine Resin History and Opportunity

António SalgueiroForestry Engineer, Founder and Vice President, GiFF/RESIPINUS

History of natural rosin in Portugal, from the beginning of the XX century to our days. The importance that resination has already had and should have again in rural development and the sustainability of forest management. Pine resin, a truly natural, ecological and sustainable product, a true green product that needs positive economic differentiation for products derived from fossil fuels and by-products, otherwise it will disappear.
