RUBBER COMPOSITION FOR TIRES AND PNEUMATIC TIRE
European Patent EP3597696 B1 · Filed: 04/13/2018 · Published: 05/17/2023

SUMITOMO RUBBER IND (Kobe-shi, Hyogo 651-0072, JP)

Inventors:

KITAURA TAKEHIRO (JP)
TOYA SUBARU (JP)
YOSHIYASU HAYATO (JP)
YAMADA HIROAKI (JP)

This patent application is another example of improving the abrasion resistance of tire rubbers using small amounts of tetrazine compounds. A plausible mechanism is the tetrazines reacting with the rubber in a Diels Alder manner to cross link it, i.e. click chemistry.  Tetrazines are 6-membered aromatic rings with molecular formula C2H2N4.

This patent describes the use of removing significant amounts of dimers, trimers, tetramers, and pentamers (what we call “dimer oil”) from resins so as to significantly reduce the resin’s Mn while producing a modified Mz that is very close to that of the starting resin.  In other words, “high Mn/high %dimer oil” to “less dimer oil/lower Mn/similar Mz”. Such compositional changes, which can often be accomplished with separation procedures like wiped film evaporators, produce different properties than can be made with the so-called traditional run-down techniques.  Examples of these modified resins were tested in adhesives and tire rubbers and the like.

Well worth the time to read and study this patent.  Standard analytical procedures are given along with measurements of basic properties of the resins.

A rubber composition, which allows unexpectedly improved efflorescence performance without deteriorated ozone resistance performance, is based on an elastomer matrix; a reinforcing filler, an anti-ozone wax, and a crumb rubber.  Anti-ozone agents form films on the surface of polymers like tires that block attack by ozone.  Apparently, the inventors discovered a polymer-based formulation that forms a surface deposit that still has resistance to ozone.

PROCESS FOR PREPARING LIMONENE AND COMPOSITION CONTAINING LIMONENE

This application claims a process to produce aviation fuel starting with tall oil pitch (TOP-our sterols feed for Arboris).  As you can see, the scheme involves a number of fractions and potentially a lot of tanks.  One thing I noticed is that the analyses of various fractions from TOP were done in 1978.  Is there no up- to-date analytical work available?

Sulfonated Lignin-Derived Compounds and uses Thereof
United States Patent Application 20230160143 A9 · Filed: 02/17/2021 · Published: 05/25/2023

“The present invention relates to novel lignin-derived compounds and compositions comprising the same and their use as redox flow battery electrolytes. The invention further provides a method for preparing said compounds and compositions as well as a redox flow battery comprising said compounds and compositions. Additionally, an assembly for carrying out the inventive method is provided.”

My comments. The sulfonated quinone compounds of interest here are by-products of the sulfite pulping of wood.  These quinones have the capability to store electrical energy better than metal based redox-flow batteries.  Time will tell how this development pans out.  It is interesting though.  Btw the sulfite pulping process has been around forever (Ingevity supposedly has used it but I’m not sure of it) but the chemistry is old.  Electrical energy storage could be a very useful outlet.
