This patent concerns converting tall oil pitch (TOP) to useful deoxygenated hydrocarbons/olefins:

The present invention relates to a method of deoxygenating tall oil pitch, yielding aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The invention even comprises turning the aliphates into polymerizable olefins by steam cracking and turning the aromates into polymerizable terephthalic acid by oxygenation and, as necessary, rearrangement. The monomers can be used for the production of polymers of partially or completely biologic origin. According to the invention, tall oil pitch is first heated to turn it into liquid, which is then fed into a catalyst bed and catalytically deoxygenated with hydrogen. The deoxygenation catalyst is preferably a Ni—Mo catalyst and, in addition, a cracking catalyst can be used, such as an acidic zeolite catalyst. The deoxygenated product stream is cooled down so as to obtain a liquid, which is distilled for separation of the aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons for use in the production of the respective monomers and finally polymers.

Nootkatone is the major flavorant in grapefruits.  It is very expensive.  This material was seldom considered as an insecticide because of cost.  This is another example of a natural compound being as effective as a multifunctional active compound (possibly heterocyclic) but a lot safer.

This patent application is very unusual to say the least given all the publicity that is “everywhere” about limonene, orange oil and the like.  I put it in to once again to highlight the fact that citrus oils and its components are excellent for safely and inexpensively eliminating pests.

This application pertains to improving or maintaining performance for the three points of the magic tire triangle.  Very good accomplishment but hard to do.  The key is a pair of two SBR rubbers (oil extended) and low Tg resins.  Resin usage is somewhat low given the employ of a lot of silica.

This is an interesting application because it gives examples using functionalized polymers, large amounts of silica and oil but less resin.  There are many different formulating strategies available for tire rubbers giving formulators a lot of latitude.

This is an interesting application and process as it is claimed to convert a multitude of low cost, low value bio-materials (called “renewable organic materials”) derived from plants such as tall oil and its derivatives into hydrocarbon monomers for polymerizations-ethylene, propylene, C4s and BTX.  Supposedly the chief by- products, water, CO2 and energy are re-used in other parts of the scheme.  This integrated process actually looks like a petroleum company’s process using crude oil as the feed. However, there are several pretreatments including acid treatments to make the chemistry work.  The inventors clearly state that truly useful feed like lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose are much harder to convert (no surprise there).  Time will tell the true value of this scheme.

This application concerns using basic anion exchange columns to separate the various fractions in tall oil.  This methodology is claimed to provide an easier phytosterols recovery process.  The CTO fractionators will find this technology very interesting.
